The Grange Academy

Co-curriculum

“Along with our knowledge-rich curriculum, Education Enrichment is one of the key pillars of Future Academies and here at The Grange. We believe that a strong programme is an essential part of raising the aspirations of our students and giving them both the knowledge and the skills to achieve excellence, regardless of their background or individual circumstances.

This programme starts with transition to Year 7, and continues all the way through to the end of the sixth form. Our offer is built on the following four pillars

  • connect students to the world of work, future education, training and employment
  • enrich the curriculum
  • provide exposure to culture, the arts and sport
  • build character, integrity, resilience and judgement

Our Education Enrichment programme is specifically designed to help our young people develop beyond the realm of academics into well-rounded, thoughtful and healthy citizens, equipped to cope with the challenges that life throws at them.

We achieve this through a variety of opportunities, ranging from an exciting array of extracurricular and cultural activities to talks and workshops on mental and physical health, staying safe, and developing an awareness of broader world-issues.”

Sport

In addition to the PE curriculum, the academy offers a range of sports enrichment clubs, many of whom boast teams which compete in local and regional competitions. Boys and girls can get involved in football, basketball, netball, athletics, cricket, dance, handball, table tennis, trampolining, rounders and badminton at a casual or competitive level.

Our facilities are second to none - we have a fitness centre with the latest CV and resistance equipment, a sports hall featuring a modern climbing wall with varying levels of difficulty, a floodlit all weather MUGA for netball and tennis, and extensive playing fields including football and rugby pitches. We are also about to install a new all weather cricket pitch here at Bushey.

 The Arts

The academy boasts excellent facilities across the performing arts.

In addition to our fabulous art and music rooms, we also have a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, and a specialist drama studio.

Every year we have students in Year 11 who stay at our sixth form and go on to study A-levels in one or more of the performing arts.

This year the academy has exciting plans to develop this provision further.

There is a new brass band at Key Stage 3, a music technology club and our budding thespians are also excitedly working towards a production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Societies

At The Grange Academy we encourage all students to actively participate in our comprehensive extra-curricular programme. This year we have introduced a range of new clubs, including a new debating society, a maths champions club, a board games club and a modern languages film club cine club where students get to watch and learn about new and old foreign language cinema. In addition, some of our budding scientists get to make things pop, crackle and smoke in our science club as they work towards achieving the STEM Crest Awards.

Trips

Experiences outside the classroom enhance our students' knowledge and help them relate classroom teaching to the world outside the school gates.

Students have also had the chance to see natural wonders in China, the USA, Italy, France and Spain. Team building and resilience is further developed through our Outward Bound residential stays in Wales and Scotland, and skiing trips to France and Italy challenge even the most accomplished skiers.

Trips to London are also common, with various department areas having organised visits to the theatre or sites of historical or political significance, such as the Houses of Parliament or Supreme Court.
